What to know before you start

Most background changes are not creative decisions. They are compliance. A marketplace says the main image must be on pure white, a visa application says plain light grey, a company directory says the same colour for everyone, and the job is to satisfy a rule that will be checked by a script reading the corner pixels. That is why the first swatch here is exactly hex ffffff rather than a tasteful off-white: a studio sweep looks better and fails the check.

The part that takes judgement is the edge. Compositing onto a solid colour is the situation where a cut-out looks worst, because the half-transparent pixels around the subject still carry the colour of the background it was shot against. Against white that mixture reads as a grey halo, against black as a bright rim. This tool tightens the mask a fraction whenever the destination is opaque, which is the right default; the rest is a choice about how soft you want the join to be.

How do you change the background of a photo?

What do marketplaces actually mean by a white background?

Pure white, checked mechanically. Amazon’s main image rule is the strictest of the common ones and it is explicit that the background must be pure white, which its systems verify rather than eyeball. Etsy, Shopify and Walmart are less prescriptive and still expect a plain, uncluttered background, and a listing on pure white will satisfy all of them.

The practical consequence is that a studio sweep, where the background falls off to light grey at the edges, is worse than useless: it looks more professional and it fails. Take the first swatch, which is exactly hex ffffff across the entire frame.

The other half of a listing rule is the pixel dimensions, which is a different job. Do the background first and then set the size with the resizer, which has the marketplace canvases as presets.

How do I stop a halo around the subject?

A halo is the old background still present in the edge pixels, so the fixes are all about cutting slightly further in. This tool already applies a mild tightening whenever the result goes onto an opaque colour, which is why a cut-out here looks cleaner on white than the same mask exported as transparency would.

Beyond that, take the edge softness to zero. Feather is the right choice for a cut-out that will land on an unknown background and the wrong one when you can see the background right now and it is flat.

The remaining lever is the source photo, and it is by far the largest. A subject shot against something a different tone from itself cuts out cleanly at two megapixels; a subject the same tone as the wall behind it is hard at forty. If a halo is unavoidable and the photo matters, reshoot rather than re-adjust.

When is a gradient better than a flat colour?

When nobody is checking. A gradient gives a subject somewhere to sit: the darker end reads as depth and the lighter end reads as light falling, which is the whole reason studios use sweeps. On a portfolio page, a social crop or an internal directory, a studio grey wash looks considerably less flat than pure white.

When something is checking, a gradient fails. Marketplace scripts want one value across the frame, and passport and visa specifications are usually written as a single plain colour with no shadow. Those are cases for the colour picker.

The six presets here are deliberately quiet. A saturated gradient behind a product competes with it, and every gradient picker that offers unlimited stops mostly gets used to prove that.

Which subjects will not sit convincingly on a new background?

Glassware and anything see-through. A bottle is partly transparent and it also refracts whatever was behind it. A single alpha channel can express the first and not the second, so the bottle arrives on white still carrying a faint memory of the old room inside it.

Hair against a matching tone. The model will find an edge; whether it is the right edge depends on contrast that may not exist in the photograph.

Fine mesh. Chain-link, lace and spokes lose their small holes, which on a new background shows up as a solid patch where light should pass.

  • Using an off-white that looks nicer

    A marketplace check reads the corner pixels and wants pure white. A tasteful cream passes a human review and fails the script, which is the single most common avoidable rejection.

  • Leaving the edge feathered on a flat colour

    Feather exists so a cut-out blends into an unknown background. When the background is right there and it is flat, softness only widens the band where the old colour still shows.

  • Changing the background before checking the size rule
