The short version
A resize is one of the two things an upload form can complain about, and it is the one written in pixels. “At least 1600 on the longest side” is a resize. “Under 5 MB” is not: that is a compression job, and running one at the other is the most common wasted afternoon in this whole category.
The arithmetic is simple and the judgement is not. Setting one edge and letting the other follow keeps the picture honest. Setting both edges forces a decision about what happens to the difference, and the three answers, pad it, crop it or stretch it, are not interchangeable. Stretching a product photo to fit a square is visible from across a room, and on most marketplaces it is against the rules.

Fewer pixels is a clean operation. More pixels on a canvas is guesswork, and it looks like guesswork. Growing is switched off by default; the upscale tool adds detail with a model instead, which is a different job.
A dimension rule and a file size rule come from different parts of an upload pipeline. Read which one you were given before you pick a tool, and check the rejection message rather than guessing.
Every edit you make is better done on the biggest version of the file you have. Resize at the end, once the cut-out, the crop and the colour are settled, and the edges stay clean.

Pick the platform rule by name from the chips, or type a width in pixels. With the proportion lock on, the height fills itself in and the shape is preserved.

Take the number from the place that rejected you. Marketplaces publish a minimum longest edge because that is what enables zoom on the listing page; social platforms publish an exact canvas because their layout is fixed. The two kinds of rule want different settings here, and mixing them up produces a file that is technically correct and still refused.
A minimum is a floor, so resizing up to meet it defeats the point: the platform wanted more real detail, not more pixels. If your photo is genuinely below the floor, the honest fix is a better source file, or the upscaler when the original is small but sharp.
An exact canvas is a box, so the question becomes what happens to the shape difference. Padding on white is the safe answer for anything commercial. Cropping to fill is the right answer for a banner, where the frame matters more than the edges.
Going down, barely. The browser resamples with a filtered downscale, and below about a quarter scale this tool halves the image in stages rather than jumping straight to the target, which is what keeps text on a label and the weave in fabric from turning into aliasing. That step-down is the difference between a thumbnail that reads and one that shimmers.
Going up, a great deal. There is no information between two pixels for a canvas to recover, so enlarging is interpolation and it looks soft. That is a property of the operation rather than of this tool, and it is why the option is off unless you turn it on deliberately.
Format matters too. Resizing a JPEG means decoding and re-encoding it, which costs a small amount of quality on every pass. Do your resize once, from the original, rather than resizing a file you already resized.
Fit inside places the whole picture in the box and fills the leftover space with the background colour. Nothing is lost and nothing is distorted, which is why it is the default for anything going to a marketplace.
Fill the box scales the picture until it covers the box and trims the overflow from the edges, centred. Use it for banners and covers where the frame is the point.
Stretch forces both edges to the numbers you gave, whatever that does to the shape. It is here because occasionally a spec genuinely wants it. Most of the time, choosing it is a mistake you can see.

Worth avoiding
An upload that fails at 8 MB fails because of bytes. Shrinking the dimensions usually shrinks the bytes too, so it looks like it worked, but you have thrown away resolution you did not need to lose. Compress to the byte target and keep the pixels.
A platform asking for 1600 pixels wants 1600 pixels of real detail. Blowing a 600 pixel photo up to 1600 passes the check and looks worse on the listing than the small original did.
Setting both edges without thinking about fit is how a bottle ends up wide. Fit inside on white gives you the square canvas the rule wanted and leaves the product the shape it is.
Each JPEG round trip costs a little. Go back to the original and resize once, rather than stacking edits on an export of an export.
Cropping after a resize throws away pixels you just spent quality preserving. Frame it first, then set the final size.

Usually yes, because there are fewer pixels to store, but it is a side effect rather than a control. If the rule you are trying to meet is written in megabytes, use the compressor: it re-encodes until the file fits and leaves the dimensions alone. Use the resizer when the rule is written in pixels.
Making a photo smaller keeps it sharp, and below about a quarter of the original size this tool halves the image in stages so fine detail survives the trip. Making it larger on a canvas cannot invent detail, so it softens. That is why growing past the original size is switched off by default here.
Leave the proportion lock on and set one edge. The other edge follows, so nothing is cut. If a platform demands both edges and your photo is a different shape, choose fit inside: the picture is placed whole inside the box and the gap is filled with the background colour you pick.
Most marketplaces want a square between 1600 and 2048 pixels on a side, with the product filling most of the frame. Amazon asks for at least 1600 pixels on the longest side to enable zoom, Etsy recommends 2000, and Shopify handles up to 2048 well. The presets above cover those three.
