The short answer

Focal length, written in millimetres, describes how much of a scene a lens takes in and how strongly it stacks near and far objects together. Short focal lengths give a wide view and exaggerate whatever is closest; long ones narrow the view and flatten the space between near and far.

Why does the same lens frame differently on different cameras?

Focal length is a property of the lens alone, but the view you get also depends on how big the sensor behind it is. A larger sensor catches a wider slice of the projected image, so the same 50 mm lens is a standard view on a full-frame body and noticeably tighter on a smaller sensor.

That is why lenses are usually described in 35 mm equivalent terms. Multiply the real focal length by the crop factor of the sensor (about 1.5x on most APS-C bodies, 1.6x on Canon APS-C, 2x on Micro Four Thirds) and you get a number that means the same thing across cameras. Phone cameras take this to an extreme: the main camera lens is only a few millimetres long, and the specification quoted to you, typically somewhere around 24 to 26 mm, is the equivalent rather than the physical figure.

How does focal length change the way a face or a product looks?

Here is the part most explanations get wrong. Perspective, meaning the relative size of near and far parts of a subject, is set by where you stand, not by the lens. A wide lens does not bend a face. What it does is force you to walk in close to fill the frame, and standing close is what makes the nose large and the ears small.

Products behave the same way. Photograph a box from half a metre with a wide lens and the front face balloons while the sides shear away, so the item looks a different shape from the one that arrives in the post. Step back and use a longer lens to keep the framing, and the proportions come out honest. Somewhere around 50 to 100 mm equivalent is the usual working range for both faces and products, because it puts you at a comfortable distance and keeps the shape truthful.

Going much longer flattens things further, which is flattering for portraits but can make a three-dimensional product look like a flat sticker with very little sense of depth.

Does zooming with your phone count as a longer lens?

Only when the phone actually switches to a separate telephoto camera. Past the last real optical step, the zoom is digital: the phone crops into the sensor and scales the result back up. You get the framing of a longer lens and the honest perspective that comes with standing further back, but the detail is invented by the upscaling rather than captured, and noise gets magnified along with everything else.

For a listing photo, the better habit is to shoot at the camera's native focal length from the distance that gives sensible proportions, then crop the file afterwards. That way you keep every real pixel you captured and decide the framing with the full image in front of you.

  1. Blaming a wide lens for distorting a face when the real cause is standing close enough to fill the frame with it.

  2. Comparing millimetre figures between cameras with different sensor sizes without converting to 35 mm equivalent.

  3. Using digital zoom instead of stepping closer or cropping later, which upscales rather than adding real reach.

  4. Shooting products with an ultra-wide phone lens at close range, which stretches the corners and misrepresents the item's proportions.

What does 35mm equivalent mean?

It is the focal length that would give the same field of view on a full-frame camera, which uses the old 35 mm film frame size. Because sensor sizes vary, quoting the equivalent lets you compare lenses across very different cameras using one familiar scale.

Which focal length is most flattering for a profile picture?

Something in the 85 to 135 mm equivalent range is the common choice. The value is not in the lens itself but in the distance it forces: shooting from a couple of metres away keeps facial proportions natural, where a close-up wide shot enlarges the nose and shrinks the ears.

Does focal length change depth of field?

At the same subject distance and aperture, a longer lens gives a shallower depth of field. If you step back to keep the same framing, the depth of field ends up broadly similar, but the background is magnified, so it looks considerably more blurred and less recognisable.

Why do phone photos of products look stretched at the edges?

Wide lenses project a rectangular scene onto a flat sensor, and that projection stretches anything near the corners. Round items turn slightly egg-shaped and straight sides lean outward. Shooting from further back with a longer setting, then cropping, avoids it.
