Depth of field
Also called dof, focus depth or shallow depth of field. Here is what it means, when it changes what you export, and what people get wrong.
The short answer
Depth of field is the zone of a photo that looks acceptably sharp, from the nearest point in focus to the furthest. A shallow depth of field keeps one subject sharp and melts everything else away; a deep one holds the whole scene. Aperture, focal length and subject distance control it.

What actually controls how much stays in focus?
Only one plane is ever truly in focus. Depth of field is the band either side of it where the softness is small enough that your eye reads it as sharp. Four things move that band.

Subject distance is the strongest lever of the four. At arm's length from a small object, the sharp band can be a couple of centimetres deep even at a middling aperture, which is why close-up product shots go soft at the back so easily.
Why do catalogue product shots need deep depth of field?
A buyer looking at a listing wants to inspect the item, not admire the photography. If the front of a shoe is crisp and the heel is mush, the photo reads as careless and hides the exact detail someone is trying to check before spending money. Marketplace zoom makes it worse, because zoom shows the soft region at full size.
There is a second, less obvious cost. Background removal works from the boundary between subject and background, and a soft boundary gives the model an ambiguous edge to trace. A product whose rim drifts out of focus tends to come back with a fuzzy or wandering cut-out edge, which is glaringly visible once the item sits on pure white. Keeping the whole object inside the sharp zone gives you a cleaner mask for free.
When is shallow depth of field the right choice?
Shallow works when the point of the picture is a single subject and the background is only context: portraits and profile pictures, lifestyle shots showing a product in use, and any situation where the real room behind the subject is cluttered and cannot be tidied.
It is the wrong choice for a main listing image on most marketplaces, which expect the product sharp and isolated on a plain background. A practical split is to shoot the catalogue frames deep and sharp, then shoot one or two lifestyle frames shallow for the secondary slots.
How do you get more depth of field without a dark photo?
Stopping down to a smaller aperture costs you light, so you have to give it back somewhere. Adding light is the cleanest option. Failing that, put the camera on a tripod and use a longer shutter speed, which is free of penalty for a still product. Raising ISO is the last resort, because it trades sharpness at the back of the object for noise across the whole frame.
Backing off and using a slightly wider framing also deepens the zone, and you can crop back in afterwards if the file has resolution to spare. Very small apertures are not a free win either: past a point, diffraction softens the entire image, so the whole frame is evenly slightly soft rather than partly crisp.
What people get wrong about depth of field
Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.
Treating editing blur as a substitute for real depth of field; optical blur falls away gradually, a masked blur has a detectable edge.
Closing the aperture as far as it goes to be safe, which brings in diffraction and leaves everything mildly soft.
Focusing on the front face of a boxed item rather than a little way into it, which wastes half the sharp zone on empty air.

What f-stop should I use for product photos?
Somewhere in the middle of the lens range is the usual choice, commonly around f/8 to f/13 for a full product on a table. That is normally deep enough to hold the whole item while staying clear of the diffraction softening that appears at the smallest apertures.
Does phone portrait mode create real depth of field?
No. Phone sensors are small and their lenses are physically very short, so almost everything is naturally in focus. Portrait mode estimates a depth map, separates the subject and blurs the rest in software. It is an approximation of the optics, not the optics themselves.
Is the sharp zone really one third in front and two thirds behind?
That is a rough guideline for general distances, not a rule. As you move closer to the subject the split evens out towards half and half, and at macro distances it is essentially symmetrical. Treat it as a hint about where to place focus rather than a calculation.
Why does my product look sharp on screen but soft on the marketplace?
Two things stack up. Downscaling for a thumbnail hides softness, so the version you approved was flattering, and the platform's zoom view then shows the full-size file where the soft area is obvious. Compression on upload can also smear detail that was already borderline.
