The short answer
HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos by default. It stores HEVC-coded images inside the HEIF container, typically at around half the size of a comparable JPEG, and can hold 10-bit colour, depth maps and several images in one file. Many websites and marketplaces cannot read it.

Is HEIC the same thing as HEIF?
Not quite. HEIF is the container, standardised as ISO/IEC 23008-12. It defines how images, sequences, metadata and auxiliary data are packed into a file, but it does not say which codec compresses the pixels. HEIC is the common case: HEIF holding images coded with HEVC, also known as H.265.
This is worth knowing because AVIF uses the same container with AV1 inside it instead. The two formats share a great deal of structure and differ mainly in the codec and, crucially, in licensing. HEVC carries patent licensing obligations, AV1 was designed to be royalty-free, and that difference explains most of the support gap you run into.
What does an iPhone actually store in a HEIC file?
More than one photograph, usually. The container lets a single file carry a set of related items, and Apple uses that.
- The main image, often coded at 10 bits per channel so HDR captures keep smooth highlights.
- A depth map from Portrait mode, which is what lets you re-adjust the background blur and the lighting after the fact.
- Auxiliary images such as thumbnails, alpha masks and segmentation mattes.
- Non-destructive edit data, so crops and adjustments can be reverted on the phone.
- Standard EXIF metadata: camera, lens, exposure, orientation, location.
A Live Photo is a HEIC still paired with a separate short HEVC movie, not one combined file, which is why the motion often disappears when a Live Photo is copied somewhere else.
Why do HEIC uploads keep failing?
Because support is concentrated in Apple's ecosystem and thins out quickly beyond it. Windows can display HEIC once the relevant image and video extensions are installed, but a fresh machine often cannot. Most web browsers do not decode HEIC natively. Plenty of desktop editors, print services and marketplace upload forms simply reject the extension.
Platform behaviour varies, so check rather than assume. Shopify lists HEIC among its accepted product media types. Meta's catalogue image requirements ask for JPEG or PNG. Where the published requirements name specific formats, upload one of those.
How should you convert HEIC without losing what matters?
Converting to JPEG re-encodes the picture, so it is not lossless, but a single conversion at a high quality setting is visually harmless. What you do lose is everything the container was holding around the picture: the depth map, the auxiliary images, the edit history and any bit depth above eight. If you might want to re-edit a Portrait shot, keep the HEIC original and treat the JPEG as an export.
Two settings on the phone help. Camera settings let you shoot in a more compatible format from the start, at the cost of larger files. Transfer settings can convert automatically when photos move to a computer. Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC instead of JPEG?
To save storage. HEVC compression gets roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, and the container also carries depth maps, 10-bit colour and edit data that JPEG has no room for. You can switch the camera to a more compatible format in settings.
How do I open a HEIC file on Windows?
Install the HEIF image extension from the Microsoft Store, which on many systems also requires the matching HEVC video extension. If you only need the picture once, converting it to JPEG or PNG is quicker than setting up decoding on every machine that needs it.
Does converting HEIC to JPEG lose quality?
Slightly, because JPEG re-encodes the image lossily. One conversion at a high quality setting is not visible in normal viewing. The bigger loss is structural: depth maps, auxiliary images, edit history and any bit depth above eight do not survive the trip.
Should I turn HEIC off on my phone?
Only if compatibility problems are costing you more than storage. If you regularly send photos to Windows users, print services or upload forms that reject the format, shooting in the more compatible option removes a step. Otherwise keep HEIC and convert on export.
Can I upload HEIC photos directly to a marketplace?
Sometimes. Shopify accepts HEIC as product media, while several other platforms publish requirements naming JPEG or PNG only. Check the platform's stated image requirements before a bulk upload, because a rejected batch is more work than converting first.
