Why is a RAW file not really an image yet?

A sensor does not see colour. Each photosite sits under a red, green or blue filter and records a single brightness value, so the file holds one colour channel per pixel rather than three. Turning that into a viewable photo takes demosaicing (working out the missing two channels for every pixel), then white balance, tone curve, colour profile, noise reduction and sharpening.

A JPEG straight out of the camera has all of that applied and thrown away the working data. A RAW file has none of it applied. What you see in a thumbnail or on the camera's screen is usually a small JPEG preview the camera embedded alongside the sensor data, not the RAW itself.

What do all those file extensions mean?

Almost every manufacturer uses its own RAW format, and often changes it between camera generations:

  • .cr2 and .cr3 for Canon
  • .nef and .nrw for Nikon
  • .arw for Sony
  • .raf for Fujifilm
  • .orf for Olympus and OM System
  • .rw2 for Panasonic
  • .pef and .dng for Pentax

.dng is the odd one out. Adobe's Digital Negative is a published, openly documented RAW container that any vendor can write, and several smaller camera and drone makers use it directly. Converting to DNG is the usual insurance policy against a proprietary format falling out of software support years from now.

What do you actually gain over a camera JPEG?

Headroom. A JPEG is 8 bits per channel with compression artefacts and a white balance already fixed in place. A RAW file keeps the sensor's full tonal range, so you can pull back a blown sky, lift shadows without them turning to mush, and change white balance after the fact as though you had set it correctly at capture.

The costs are real: RAW files run several times larger than a JPEG of the same shot, they need software that recognises your camera model, and nothing on the open web displays them. You are trading storage and a processing step for editing latitude.

How do you get a RAW photo onto a website or marketplace?

You develop it and export a normal image. Marketplaces, content systems and browsers accept JPEG, PNG, WebP and increasingly AVIF; none of them accept RAW. Export at the largest size the destination allows, then resize and compress from that export rather than repeatedly re-exporting from RAW.

Keep the RAW file. It is your negative. Once you have deleted it, the exported JPEG is all the data you have left.

What people get wrong about raw image file

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.

  1. Judging sharpness or colour from the embedded JPEG preview rather than the developed RAW.

  2. Assuming a new camera's RAW files will open in older software, when vendor formats change with each generation.

  3. Deleting the RAW after exporting a JPEG, which throws away every bit of editing headroom you paid for.

  4. Trying to upload a .cr3 or .arw straight to a listing or a website, which will simply reject it.

Is RAW actually better quality than JPEG?

It holds more data, which is not quite the same thing. A well exposed JPEG can look identical to a developed RAW. The difference shows when you need to correct something: recovering highlights, fixing a colour cast or lifting shadows all work far better with 12 to 14 bit RAW data than with an 8 bit JPEG.

Can I upload a RAW file to Etsy or eBay?

No. Marketplaces accept JPEG and PNG, sometimes WebP, and will reject a .cr3, .nef or .arw outright. Develop the RAW in your camera software or an editor, export a JPEG at the size the platform recommends, and upload that.

What is DNG and should I convert my files to it?

DNG is Adobe's openly documented RAW container. Converting gives you one format instead of a dozen and reduces the risk that a proprietary format loses software support. The trade-off is that some vendor-specific processing data may not carry over, so photographers who rely on manufacturer software usually keep the originals too.

Does editing a RAW file damage the original?

No. RAW editing is non-destructive: your adjustments are stored as instructions, either in a sidecar file or in the catalogue, and the sensor data is never rewritten. You can reset to the untouched capture at any point, and re-develop the same file differently years later.
