A profile picture is the small image that represents a person or a business on a platform. Most sites take a square upload and display it as a circle, at sizes as small as a comment avatar, so the practical rules are a centred subject, generous margin and a background simple enough to read tiny.

Why does a square upload need extra margin?
Because the circle eats the corners. When a square image is masked to a circle, roughly a fifth of its area disappears, and all of it comes from the outer edges. A crop that puts the top of the head right against the frame will have the crown sliced off the moment the mask is applied.
The safe habit is to compose inside an imaginary circle rather than the square: head centred, eyes around the upper third, and clear space above the head and beyond the shoulders. Anything you care about keeping belongs well inside that circle.
What size should you upload?
Bigger than the largest place it appears, and square. Around 400 x 400 px is a widely used starting point and is commonly recommended for business profiles, though the exact figure varies by platform and platforms change their handling without much announcement. Uploading a larger square, say 800 x 800 or 1000 x 1000, costs almost nothing and gives the site room to generate every size it needs.
What you should not do is upload something barely larger than the display size. Avatars are shown at several sizes on the same site, from a large profile header down to a comment badge, and the platform derives all of them from your one file.
What actually reads well at 40 pixels?
Faces read well. Scenes do not.
- Crop to head and shoulders. A full-body shot leaves a face a few pixels tall.
- Keep the background plain or softly blurred. A busy street behind you turns into visual static at small sizes, which is why a plain backdrop or applied background blur is the standard choice for a headshot.
- Separate yourself from the background by tone. Dark hair against a dark wall merges into one shape.
- Face the light. A shadowed face at 40 px is just a dark oval.
- Skip text and logos on a personal avatar. They are unreadable, and the space is better spent on your face.
For a brand account the same logic applies to the mark: one shape, high contrast, filling the circle.

What is the best size for a profile picture?
Upload a square well above the display size. Around 400 x 400 px is commonly recommended, and going larger, such as 800 x 800, gives the platform headroom to generate its own sizes. Check the platform's current help page if you need an exact figure, since these change.
Can I use a passport photo as a profile picture?
It will work but it rarely flatters. Passport photos require a neutral expression and a plain light background by design, which reads as institutional rather than approachable. Keep the plain background and the clear head crop, but use a natural expression.
Should the background be removed entirely?
Removing it and replacing it with a plain colour is a solid option for a headshot, especially where the original setting is busy. Blurring works too and looks more natural. Pure transparency is risky, since a circular avatar on a dark theme will show whatever is behind it.
Why does my profile picture look cropped or off centre?
Most platforms centre-crop a non-square upload to square, then mask it to a circle. If your face is not centred in the source, both steps push it further off. Crop to a centred square yourself before uploading.
