The short answer
A white background is a product-photo backdrop with no colour or detail behind the item. Marketplaces that require pure white mean the exact value RGB 255,255,255 (#FFFFFF), not a backdrop that merely looks white. A grey or cream cast still counts as a failure even when the eye cannot see it.

Why does pure white mean one exact number?
Pure white is the top of the RGB range: red, green and blue all at 255, written as #FFFFFF. Anything below that is a light grey or a tinted white, however clean it looks on your screen.
Platforms are strict about the number because product grids are rendered on white pages. If your backdrop is 244,244,246 and the page is 255,255,255, your photo appears as a dull rectangle sitting in a bright grid. Amazon's product image requirements and Walmart Marketplace's guidance both specify pure white main images for exactly this reason, and eBay recommends a plain, uncluttered background.
How do you check whether your white is actually white?
Do not trust your monitor. Sample it instead.
- Eyedropper. Pick several points across the background, not just one. A single hot spot at 255 can sit next to corners at 238.
- Histogram. Pure white piles up as a spike hard against the right edge. A backdrop that peaks short of the edge is grey.
- Corners and edges. Lighting falls off away from centre, so the corners of a lit backdrop are almost always the darkest part.
If the backdrop is uneven, replacing it outright is more reliable than trying to burn it out with exposure. Cutting the product out and dropping it onto a flat white canvas, which is what background replacement tools including Photomop do, gives you the exact value every time.
What is the risk of pushing everything to 255?
Blown edges. If you overexpose the whole frame to force the backdrop white, the bright parts of the product go with it. A white shirt, a cream ceramic mug or a chrome rim loses its outline and appears to melt into the background.
The fix is to separate the two: light the backdrop and the product independently, or expose for the product and clean the background afterwards. Pale products also benefit from a soft grey drop shadow or a faint edge, so the silhouette still reads against white.
What people get wrong about white background
Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.
Raising exposure until the background clears instead of lighting the background separately, which erases detail in pale products.
Uploading a transparent PNG to Etsy expecting white, when Etsy does not support transparency and renders those areas black.
Sampling one point in the centre of the frame and assuming the whole backdrop matches it.

Is off-white acceptable for a marketplace main image?
Not where pure white is required. Amazon's product image requirements and Walmart's guidance both call for RGB 255,255,255 on the main image. Off-white may pass an automated check on some platforms and fail on others, so treat anything short of 255 as a risk on the main shot.
Should I use a transparent PNG instead of a white background?
Only where the platform supports it. Transparency is useful for your own site and for adverts, but Etsy does not support transparent PNGs and shows those areas as black. When in doubt, flatten onto a white canvas before uploading.
How do I photograph a white product on white?
Separate the two with light and shape. Add a rim or edge light so the product's outline stays brighter or darker than the backdrop, then add a subtle shadow underneath. Without that separation, the silhouette vanishes at 255.
Does a white background hurt how natural a product looks?
On the main image that is the point: it removes distraction so shape and colour are judged fairly. Keep character shots for the rest of the gallery, where lifestyle and in-use images give the product a setting.
