A transparent background is an image saved with its backdrop removed, so the subject sits on nothing and whatever is behind it shows through. It needs a format with an alpha channel, which is why these files are almost always PNG, WebP or AVIF, and never JPEG.

Which formats can hold a transparent background?
PNG is the dependable default: it stores 8-bit alpha, so soft edges and shadows survive, and everything opens it. WebP carries alpha in both its lossy and lossless modes, and AVIF supports full alpha as well, both at smaller file sizes than PNG for web use. TIFF and HEIC also store alpha, TIFF for print and archival work and HEIC as the format phones often produce.
GIF technically supports transparency but only as an on or off state per pixel, which gives a stepped outline on any curve. SVG is transparent by nature but is vector, so it suits logos and icons rather than photographs. JPEG has no alpha channel at all, so exporting to it always fills the empty area with a solid colour.
Where does a transparent background actually help?
Anywhere the backdrop is not fixed in advance:
- Logos and badges that have to sit over headers, photographs and coloured sections without a white box around them.
- Product images dropped into themed areas of a store, where the section colour changes by season or by collection.
- Adverts, banners and social overlays where the same cut-out gets reused on many different scenes.
- App icons, favicons and UI assets that need a non-rectangular shape.
- Any file you may want to recolour behind later, since the subject is already separated.

Where does a transparent background cause trouble?
Several important destinations either forbid transparency or render it badly, so check before uploading.

Email clients and older office software are also inconsistent about alpha, so for anything going into a newsletter or a slide deck it is safer to flatten onto the background colour you expect.

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.
Checking the cut-out only on a white page, where a pale edge fringe stays invisible until it lands on a dark banner.
Uploading a transparent PNG as an Amazon or Walmart main image, where a pure white background is required.

How do I make a background transparent?
Separate the subject from the backdrop with a mask or a path, then export to a format that stores alpha, normally PNG. Automatic background removal does the separation for you; the part worth checking afterwards is the edge, viewed against a dark colour.
Why does my transparent PNG have a white background when I open it?
Usually because the viewer draws transparency as white, or because the file was flattened at some point, often by a JPEG conversion. Open it over a dark or coloured background to tell the two apart before you re-cut anything.
Is PNG or WebP better for a transparent product image?
WebP files are typically smaller at similar quality and support alpha in both lossy and lossless modes, which makes them a good choice for your own website. PNG remains the safer format for handing files to clients, printers and marketplaces.
Can I upload a transparent image to Etsy?
You can upload it, but Etsy does not support transparent PNGs and the transparent areas show as black in the listing. Flatten the image onto white, or onto whatever colour you want visible, before uploading.
Does a transparent background make the file larger?
Somewhat, because the alpha channel is extra data, and because PNG is lossless where a JPEG of the same photo would be much smaller. Large flat transparent areas compress well; long detailed edges such as hair are what add weight.
