Also called camera shake, blurry photo or movement blur. Here is what it means, when it changes what you export, and what people get wrong.
The short answer
Motion blur is the smearing you get when the subject or the camera moves while the shutter is open. It appears as streaks running along the direction of that movement, unlike out-of-focus blur, which softens evenly in every direction. A faster shutter speed is the only real prevention.

How do you tell motion blur from missed focus?
Look at a small bright highlight, such as a reflection on metal or glass. Out of focus, it spreads into a round patch. In motion, it stretches into a line, and every other highlight in the frame stretches the same way. That directionality is the giveaway.
The direction also tells you the cause. If the background is sharp and only the subject is smeared, the subject moved. If everything in the frame is streaked in the same direction, the camera moved, which is camera shake. If parts of the frame are sharp and parts are soft but nothing is streaked, you have a focus or depth of field problem instead, and the fix is completely different.
What shutter speed stops the blur?
For handheld camera shake, the traditional starting point is a shutter speed at least as fast as one over the focal length in 35 mm equivalent terms, so roughly 1/50 of a second at a 50 mm equivalent view. Treat that as a rough guideline rather than a rule: it assumes a steady hand, and higher-resolution sensors show small wobbles that older cameras hid.
Subject movement needs its own budget, independent of the lens. A hand adjusting a garment, a pet, or a hanging item still swinging after you positioned it will all need a faster shutter than the guideline suggests. Image stabilisation, whether in the lens or the body, counters camera movement only; it does nothing for a subject that is moving on its own.
For still products the cheapest fix is not a faster shutter at all. Put the camera on a tripod, use the self-timer or a remote so pressing the button does not shake it, and then a slow shutter costs you nothing.
Can editing remove motion blur?
Not properly. Sharpening raises contrast along whatever edges survived, so applied to a streaked photo it gives you a bolder streak. Deconvolution, which tries to reverse the smear mathematically, can help when the blur is short, uniform and in a single known direction, but real handheld shots usually blur along a small curve rather than a straight line, and any noise in the file gets amplified as the algorithm works backwards.
Machine learning deblurring produces the most convincing results and is the least honest about what it is doing. It reconstructs plausible detail from what it has seen before, which means the model number on a smeared label may come back crisply legible and wrong. For a listing photo where a buyer relies on what is written on the product, reshooting is both faster and safer than arguing later about a returned item.

How do I know if my photo is blurry from shake or from focus?
Find a bright specular highlight and look at its shape. Camera shake stretches it into a streak, and all the highlights streak the same way. A focus miss spreads it into a round, even patch. If only part of the frame is soft and nothing is streaked, it is depth of field.
Can AI fix a blurry photo?
It can improve how a photo looks, not what it recorded. Deblurring models generate detail that is plausible rather than recovered, so text, serial numbers and fine patterns can come back sharp and incorrect. Useful for a background element, risky for anything a buyer will rely on.
What shutter speed do I need for handheld product shots?
As a starting point, at least one over the focal length in 35 mm equivalent millimetres, so about 1/60 of a second at a standard view. Go faster if you are tired, holding the camera at arm's length, or shooting anything that can still be moving slightly.
Is motion blur ever something you want?
Yes. Deliberate blur communicates movement, as with pouring liquid, flowing fabric or a panned shot where the subject stays sharp and the background streaks. The difference between intentional and accidental blur is whether the important part of the frame is crisp.
