Native resolution
Also called original resolution, true resolution or source resolution. Here is what it means, when it changes what you export, and what people get wrong.
The short answer
Native resolution is the pixel dimensions an image was actually captured or rendered at, before anything resampled it. It is the ceiling on how much real detail the file can hold, since everything above it is estimated. Enlarging raises the pixel count but never raises the native resolution.

Why is native resolution the ceiling on detail?
A sensor or renderer took a finite number of measurements of the scene, and that is all the information there will ever be. Resampling can move that information onto a different grid, but it cannot create more of it. A 1200 x 1200 px photo enlarged to 4000 x 4000 px has sixteen million pixels and 1,440,000 measurements behind them. It is a 1.44 MP image wearing a 16 MP label.
This is why native resolution, not current dimensions, is the number worth recording when you archive or hand files to a printer.
How can you spot an image that has been upscaled?
No single sign is conclusive, but they stack up.
- At 100 percent zoom, edges are soft and there is no fine texture anywhere, not even in fabric or hair.
- JPEG blocking from the smaller original appears as enlarged soft squares rather than 8 x 8 pixel ones.
- Skin, wood and fabric look smooth and slightly waxy, with no grain at all.
- File size is low for the pixel count. A genuine 25 MP photograph saved at good quality rarely lands at a few hundred kilobytes.
- EXIF is missing, or the dimensions match no camera output size, or they are an exact multiple of a common web size such as 800 or 1024.
Why does exporting at native resolution matter?
Some editors quietly cap the size of what they hand back, so a 4000 px original returns as a 1000 px file and you have lost fifteen of every sixteen pixels without being told. Run one image through any new tool and compare the exported dimensions against the original before you process a whole catalogue. Keep one master at native resolution, edit that, and export copies at each destination size. Once the master is gone, every future use is capped by whatever export you happened to keep.
Does the term mean something different for screens?
Yes, though the principle is the same. A display's native resolution is the physical grid of its panel, for example 2560 x 1440. Feed it that exact resolution and every image pixel lands on one hardware pixel. Run it at anything else and the panel scales the picture to fit, which softens text and fine lines in exactly the way resampling an image does. Matching pixel for pixel is always the sharpest option, on paper and on glass.
What people get wrong about native resolution
Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.
Saving an image out of a messaging app or a web page, which usually hands back a re-compressed copy well below native resolution.
Archiving only the marketplace-sized export and deleting the camera original, which caps every future use of that photo.
Reading the dimensions in file properties as the native resolution, when they only report the file's current size.

How do I find an image's native resolution?
File properties give you current dimensions, not native ones. If the file still carries EXIF, the camera model and its known output size are a strong clue. Otherwise judge it from the evidence: real texture at 100 percent zoom suggests native, uniform softness suggests it was enlarged.
Can I restore an image after downsizing it?
No. Downsizing discards pixels permanently, and enlarging afterwards estimates replacements rather than retrieving the originals. The only recovery is a copy of the earlier file, which is why keeping one full-size master per photo is worth the storage.
Does a phone photo have a native resolution?
Yes. Many phones output around 4032 x 3024 px, roughly 12 MP, from their main camera. Digital zoom lowers the effective figure, because it crops into the sensor and then enlarges, so a zoomed shot at the same dimensions carries less real detail.
Is native resolution the same as megapixels?
They are related but not identical. Megapixels give the total pixel count, native resolution gives the width and height the image was genuinely captured at. An upscaled file can have a high megapixel count and a low native resolution, which is precisely the distinction that matters.
