Sharpening

The short answer

Sharpening increases contrast along edges so a photo reads as crisper. It does not recover detail the lens or sensor never captured; it exaggerates the detail already present. Pushed too far it leaves pale halos beside edges, turns fine noise into hard speckle, and makes an image look processed.

How does unsharp mask actually work?

The name comes from a darkroom trick: make a blurred, low-contrast negative copy, sandwich it with the original, and the mismatch between them falls along edges. Digital versions do the same arithmetic. The software blurs a copy of the image, subtracts it from the original to find where brightness changes quickly, and then pushes those areas further apart. Dark side of an edge gets darker, light side gets lighter.

  • Amount is how strongly that difference is applied. It controls how emphatic the effect looks.
  • Radius is how wide the affected band either side of an edge is. Small radii bring out fine texture; large radii create the visible outline people call a halo.
  • Threshold sets how much contrast a difference needs before it counts as an edge at all. Raising it leaves smooth areas such as sky, backdrop paper and skin untouched, which is the main defence against sharpening noise.

Modern sliders labelled clarity, structure or texture are variations on the same idea at different radii. Clarity works on a wide radius and shifts midtone local contrast; sharpening proper works on a narrow one.

Why can sharpening not fix a blurry photo?

Because it has nothing to work from. Blur, whether from missed focus or movement, spreads the information from each point across neighbouring pixels and mixes it irreversibly with theirs. Sharpening only looks at the differences that survived, so it amplifies a smeared edge into a bolder smeared edge. The photo gets more contrast and no more truth.

Machine learning deblurring and upscaling go further, but the honest description is that they generate plausible detail consistent with their training rather than restoring the original. That is fine for texture on a jumper and risky for anything a buyer will read as fact, such as a serial number, a care label, a hallmark or the fine print on packaging.

When in the workflow should you sharpen?

Last, and for the size the image will actually be displayed at. Sharpening at full resolution and then resizing down discards most of what you applied, and the resampling can leave crunchy edges behind. Resize first, sharpen second, export third.

Professionals often split it into two stages: a light capture sharpening pass to compensate for the sensor's own softening, then an output pass tuned for the final destination. A web thumbnail wants more relative sharpening than a large print, because downsampling softens.

What does over-sharpening cost you?

Three things, in rising order of annoyance. First, halos: a pale outline that is invisible on a busy background and obvious against the pure white backdrop most marketplaces expect, where it reads as a badly done cut-out even when the cut-out was fine. Second, amplified faults, because sharpening does not know the difference between real detail and noise, JPEG blocking or coloured fringing from the lens, and it strengthens all of them equally. Third, file size, since crisp high-contrast edges and boosted grain both compress worse than the original.

There is also a credibility cost. Buyers cannot name what is wrong with an over-processed photo, but they register it as retouched, and a listing that looks manipulated invites more questions than one that looks plain.

What people get wrong about sharpening

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.

  1. Sharpening at full resolution and then resizing down, which throws away most of the effect and can leave brittle edges.

  2. Leaving threshold at zero on a noisy photo, so every grain speck is treated as an edge worth strengthening.

  3. Raising radius rather than amount to make an image look crisp at a glance, which produces a glowing outline against a white background.

  4. Judging the result zoomed to 200 per cent, where any sharpening looks excessive, instead of at the size buyers will see.

Does sharpening add detail to a photo?

No. It increases contrast where detail already exists, which makes edges read as crisper to your eye. Nothing new is recovered. If the detail was lost to soft focus, movement or heavy compression, sharpening amplifies the damaged version of it rather than the original.

What is the difference between sharpening and clarity?

They are the same operation at different scales. Sharpening uses a small radius and acts on fine edges, so it affects texture. Clarity, sometimes called structure, uses a much wider radius and shifts midtone local contrast, which changes the overall punch of an image rather than its detail.

How much should I sharpen a product photo for a marketplace?

Less than feels right while you are editing. Resize to the dimensions the platform will show, apply a modest amount at a small radius, then inspect the outline of the product against white at 100 per cent. If you can see a light rim tracing the object, reduce the radius.

Does sharpening make a file bigger?

Usually yes, though not dramatically on its own. High-contrast edges are harder to compress than gradual ones, and if the image carries noise the sharpening boosts that too, which costs considerably more. Sharpening after compression also emphasises any artefacts already baked in.
