Saturation is how pure or intense a colour is, from grey at zero to fully vivid at maximum. Raising it pushes every colour further from neutral at once. Lowering it drains colour towards greyscale without changing how light or dark the image is.

How is vibrance different from saturation?

Saturation is blunt: it multiplies the intensity of every colour by the same amount, so colours that were already strong go first, clipping into flat blocks with no detail left in them.

Vibrance is weighted. It pushes the muted colours harder and leaves the already-saturated ones roughly alone, and it usually protects the orange-red band where skin tones sit. The practical result is that you can move vibrance a long way before anything looks artificial, while the same move on saturation turns a red jumper into a shapeless red rectangle.

Chroma is the third term you will see. It describes colour intensity in perceptually organised spaces such as CIELAB, where adjusting it changes purity without dragging lightness along with it.

What does oversaturation cost a seller?

Returns. A buyer chooses based on your photograph and judges the item against it when the parcel arrives. A teal that photographed as electric blue, or a beige that was pushed into a warm tan, produces a mismatch the customer notices immediately, and the refund costs you the shipping in both directions plus the listing's rating.

Saturated colour also destroys detail. Once a channel clips at maximum, the texture in that area is gone: the weave of a red fabric, the grain in dark wood, the shading that shows a bag has depth. The picture reads as brighter and, at any size worth looking at, cheaper.

When is reducing saturation the right move?

More often than sellers expect. Pull it down when the backdrop or the surrounding light has tinted the product, when reflections from a coloured surface have crept into a neutral item, or when a colour is sitting outside what the display can show and is clipping into a flat patch.

Targeted reductions beat global ones. Dropping the saturation of a single colour range, greens for a spill of light off a lawn or reds for a hot skin reflection, fixes the problem without draining the rest of the frame. Check the result against the physical item under neutral light rather than against your memory of it.

What people get wrong about saturation

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.

  1. Raising global saturation to make a listing photo stand out, which clips the strongest colour and flattens its texture.

  2. Assuming vibrance is a gentler saturation slider when it deliberately treats colour ranges unequally, which can skew a product's true colour.

  3. Judging saturation on a wide-gamut phone screen in a non-managed viewer, where everything already looks more intense than it is.

  4. Boosting saturation to compensate for a colour cast, when the actual fix is white balance.

Should I increase saturation on product photos?

Rarely, and only slightly. The job of a listing photo is to show the item as it will arrive, and pushed colour is a leading cause of returns. If the picture looks lifeless, the cause is usually flat lighting or a white balance error rather than a lack of saturation.

What is the difference between saturation and vibrance?

Saturation raises every colour equally, so the strongest ones clip first. Vibrance raises the muted colours more and largely leaves saturated ones and skin tones alone. Vibrance is the safer control for a general lift; saturation is better for deliberate, targeted changes.

Why do my colours look duller after uploading?

Usually a colour space issue rather than an editing one. A wide-gamut file whose profile is stripped or ignored renders flat, because the numbers get read as sRGB. Converting to sRGB before upload, rather than just relabelling, keeps the colours where you put them.

Does desaturating an image reduce file size?

Slightly in a lossy format, because there is less chroma information to encode, but the effect is small and unpredictable. Dimensions and compression quality drive file size far more. Never desaturate for size reasons on a photo where colour is the selling point.
