Head to head

Photomop vs iLoveIMG

These two overlap more than any other pair on the site: compress, resize, crop and convert are the core of both. The difference is where the file goes and how hard the free tier is metered.

The short answer

iLoveIMG and Photomop cover the same everyday jobs, but iLoveIMG uploads your file and Photomop does not. iLoveIMG's free Basic plan meters each tool separately at 30 compressions, 30 resizes, 3 background removals and 1 upscale a month, and processed files stay on their servers for one to two hours.

Updated

Key takeaways

  • iLoveIMG uploads every file to its servers. Photomop runs the same jobs on your own hardware.
  • iLoveIMG's free plan allows 30 compressions and 30 resizes a month, but only 1 crop and 1 upscale.
  • iLoveIMG keeps processed files on its servers for one to two hours after the job finishes.
  • iLoveIMG Premium is $7.00 a month, or $4.00 a month billed annually at $48 a year.
  • Photomop's resize, crop, compress, convert and batch tools work today with no per-tool counter.

What is actually built on our side today

Not every tool in the catalogue has a working page yet: upscale image, remove object and passport photo are still being built. Everything else runs today, on your own device. We put that first rather than at the bottom, because it is the thing most likely to send you to iLoveIMG instead, and you should find it out here rather than after you have opened a tab.

Do these two actually do the same jobs?

More than any other pair on this site, yes. Compress, resize, crop and convert are the centre of iLoveIMG's suite and they are also the four Photomop tools that have working pages today. Both take the single-page approach rather than the canvas approach: you land on the tool, drop a file in, set what you need and take the result away.

The difference is the step in the middle. iLoveIMG sends the file up to a server, runs the operation there and sends the result back. Photomop reads the file from disk into the tab's memory, does the work on your own hardware and writes it back out. Same job, same shape of interface, and a completely different path for your file.

What does each free plan actually give you?

iLoveIMG's Basic plan is free and documented per tool, which is more honesty than most of this market offers. Compress, Resize, Convert, Rotate and Watermark allow 30 operations a month each. Blur face allows 10. Remove background allows 3. Crop, Editor, Meme and Upscale allow 1 each. Most tools carry a 200 MB file size limit, and the comparison table shows Basic is not ad free.

One crop a month is the number that catches people out, because cropping is the job you do most and it is metered hardest. Photomop has no per-tool counter and no ads, and exports come back at the resolution you brought. Your hardware does the work, so there is no server bill for us to ration against.

How long does iLoveIMG keep your file?

Their own documentation states that processed files remain on their servers for one to two hours. That is a reasonable engineering decision: you need a window in which to download the result, and a cleanup job has to run on some schedule. It is stated openly rather than buried, which counts for something in a category where many vendors say nothing at all.

Whether it matters depends entirely on the photo. For a screenshot you are compressing for a blog post, an hour on somebody's disk is nothing. For a client's unreleased product shot, a medical image, a document with a name on it, or anything under an embargo, a retention window is a window, and the only way to have none is not to upload.

What does iLoveIMG do that Photomop does not?

It has more tools finished. Upscaling, face blurring, watermarking, a meme generator and rotation all work today on iLoveIMG, and on our side upscaling, object removal and the passport photo tool do not have a working page yet. If you need one of those this afternoon, that is a real and immediate argument.

It also publishes a developer API through iLoveAPI, with 2,500 free credits a month on registration. Photomop has no hosted API today, and by construction an on-device tool is a harder thing to call from a server. If your workflow needs to be driven by code rather than by a person, iLoveIMG is the one that supports it.

Which one costs less over a year?

iLoveIMG Premium is $7.00 a month, or $4.00 a month billed annually at $48 a year, and buys unlimited processing, an ad-free service, 2,000 AI credits and priority support. That is genuinely cheap for what it removes. Business pricing for 25 or more users is not published, so a team cannot work out a budget without talking to somebody first.

Photomop is free to use today, and Pro is published at $8 a month or $5 a month billed yearly but is not open for purchase yet. At these prices the annual difference is smaller than a couple of lunches, so cost is unlikely to decide this. Where the file goes, and which tools exist today, will decide it instead.

What each one costs

How much is Photomop against iLoveIMG?

Both ladders in full, monthly and yearly, because the large number on a pricing page is almost always the yearly rate and almost nobody pays it in month one.

Who should pick Photomop, and who should pick iLoveIMG?

Both columns are the same length on purpose. If ours were twice as long you would be reading an advert.

Photomop

Pick this if the file should not be uploaded at all, or you resize and crop often enough that a one-a-month cap would hurt.

  • Photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded
  • Free exports come back at the resolution you brought, with no watermark
  • No per-image credits and no account as things stand today
Open the toolbox

iLoveIMG

Pick this if you want background removal, upscaling and watermarking finished and working today, and an API to drive them from code.

  • The core tools are exactly the jobs most people actually need: compress, resize, crop, convert, rotate and watermark
  • Each tool is a single page that opens on the task rather than a canvas you have to set up first
  • Premium at $4.00 a month billed annually is among the cheapest unlimited-processing subscriptions in this category

The honest version

The case against us is short and worth saying out loud: upscale image, remove object and passport photo do not have a working page yet, so those jobs need another tool today, and there is no hosted API today, so a workflow that needs one has to look elsewhere. If either of those is the thing you need this week, iLoveIMG is the better answer today and this page is not going to argue otherwise.

Questions people ask

Photomop and iLoveIMG, answered

The things people search for once they have narrowed it down to these two.

Is iLoveIMG really free?

The Basic plan is free, but each tool is metered separately. You get 30 compressions, resizes, conversions, rotations and watermarks a month, 10 face blurs, 3 background removals, and just 1 crop, 1 upscale and 1 meme. The pricing table also marks an ad-free service as a Premium feature, so Basic carries ads.

Does iLoveIMG delete my files?

Their documentation states that processed files remain on their servers for one to two hours before removal. That window exists so you can download your result. If you would rather no server ever held the file, Photomop does the same compress, resize, crop and convert jobs on your own device instead.

How much does iLoveIMG Premium cost?

Premium is $7.00 a month paid monthly, or $4.00 a month billed annually, which iLoveIMG states as $48 a year. It buys unlimited processing, an ad-free service, 2,000 AI credits and priority support. Business plans for 25 or more users are custom priced and no figure is published on the pricing page.

Does Photomop upload my images?

No. Every Photomop tool runs on your own device inside the tab. The file is read from disk into memory, processed there and written back out as a download, so no server of ours ever holds it. You can confirm this yourself by watching your browser's network tab while a tool runs.

Which is better for compressing images?

Both do the job well. iLoveIMG allows 30 compressions a month on its free Basic plan with a 200 MB file size limit, and uploads each file. Photomop compresses on your own hardware with no per-tool counter, which matters most when you have a folder of images rather than one file.

Does Photomop have an API like iLoveAPI?

Not today. iLoveAPI gives 2,500 free credits a month on registration and prices paid usage through an interactive calculator with a 20% annual discount. Photomop has no hosted API at present, so if your pipeline needs to be driven by code rather than a person, iLoveIMG is the better fit.

Try the part that is built

Resize, crop, compress, convert and batch edit all work right now, on your own device, at full resolution and with no watermark. No account, nothing uploaded. Read how the on-device pipeline works if you want to check that claim before you trust it with a client’s photo, or the pricing page for where the paid line falls.
