Halo (fringing)
Also called halo effect, edge fringing or colour fringe. Here is what it means, when it changes what you export, and what people get wrong.
The short answer
A halo is the pale or coloured outline left around a cut-out when traces of the old background cling to the subject's edge. It shows up most when you lift a subject that was shot against a light backdrop and place it on a dark one, drawing a bright rim around every edge.

What causes a halo?
Several things, and they often stack up:
- Mixed edge pixels. At the boundary, a single pixel genuinely contains light from both the subject and the background, thanks to anti-aliasing and lens blur. Hiding part of that pixel does not remove the background colour still sitting inside it.
- Colour spill. A strong backdrop bounces light onto the subject, so a real band of green or white sits on the product itself, several pixels deep.
- A mask cut too generously. If the boundary is placed a pixel outside the true edge, a full ring of background survives.
- Alpha handled the wrong way. Reading premultiplied data as straight alpha, or the reverse, throws off the edge maths and produces a systematic dark or bright rim.
- Repeated flattening. Compositing onto white, saving, then cutting out again bakes a light rim into the pixels permanently.
Any background removal, in Photomop or a desktop editor, has to make a judgement about those mixed pixels, which is why the edge is where quality differences show first.
How do you get rid of a halo?
Work in this order, checking against a background darker than the original:
- Contract the mask by about one pixel so the boundary sits just inside the true edge, then re-feather lightly so it does not go jagged.
- Defringe or remove the matte colour. Most editors have a command that replaces edge pixels with colour sampled from just inside the subject, sometimes labelled remove white matte or remove black matte.
- Decontaminate the colour. This is the proper fix: estimate the true foreground colour of each partly transparent pixel and discard the background contribution, rather than simply darkening the rim.
- Re-cut with a matting model that outputs foreground colours as well as opacity, which handles hair far better than any amount of manual trimming.
Contracting alone is a blunt tool. On hair or fur it eats the detail you were trying to keep, so use it on hard-edged products and rely on decontamination for soft ones.
Is a halo the same as chromatic aberration?
No, and treating them as the same leads to the wrong fix. Chromatic aberration is a lens fault present in the original photograph: purple, green or magenta fringes along high-contrast edges, usually worst towards the corners of the frame. It is there whether or not you ever cut anything out.
A compositing halo only appears once the subject moves onto a new background, and its colour matches the backdrop the photo was taken against, not the lens. If a shot has chromatic aberration, correct it during raw processing before the cut-out, because once it is inside the edge pixels it becomes part of the fringe you then have to remove.
What people get wrong about halo (fringing)
Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.
Contracting the mask aggressively to kill a halo on hair, which removes the hair along with the fringe.
Darkening the edge with a burn brush instead of decontaminating it, which swaps a bright rim for a dirty grey one.
Shooting a pale product against a bright white sweep and expecting a clean cut, when the spill on the edge is real light on the product.

Why does my PNG have a white outline on a dark background?
Because the subject was cut from a light background and the edge pixels still hold some of that light colour. On white it is invisible, on dark it reads as a bright rim. Contract the mask slightly and apply a defringe or decontamination step.
Can a halo be fixed after the image is flattened?
Only partly. Once flattened, the rim is ordinary pixels, so you are retouching rather than correcting a mask. A one-pixel inward trim or careful cloning can help on hard edges, but on hair the honest answer is to re-cut from the original.
Does a green screen cause halos?
It can, because a bright green backdrop bounces green light onto the subject. That spill is real light on the product, not a masking error, so the fix is a spill suppression or decontamination step, plus enough distance between subject and screen when shooting.
What is a matte line?
The same thing under its film-compositing name: a visible seam of the wrong colour along the boundary between foreground and background. It usually means the matte and the foreground colours disagree about where the subject actually ends.
