Background removal
Also called remove background, background eraser or bg removal. Here is what it means, when it changes what you export, and what people get wrong.

Background removal separates the subject of a photo from everything behind it and discards the rest, leaving either a transparent cut-out or the subject on a new backdrop. Modern tools do it in stages: find the subject, solve the soft edge, then clean colour bleeding from the old background.

What happens between clicking remove and seeing a cut-out?
Three stages, and each one fixes a problem the previous stage cannot.
- Segmentation decides which pixels are the subject. The output is a hard mask: in or out, no middle ground.
- Matting solves the boundary properly, producing a continuous alpha value for every edge pixel so a strand of hair can be sixty percent opaque rather than forced to a yes or a no.
- Decontamination, also called spill suppression, estimates what colour those edge pixels would have been without the old background mixed into them, and replaces it.
Skip the second stage and edges look cut with scissors. Skip the third and the cut-out carries a faint rim of whatever it was shot against, which becomes obvious the moment you place it on a different colour.
Why do some photos still defeat it?
The failure modes are consistent and worth recognising before you blame the tool. Fine hair against a busy or similarly coloured background is the classic one, because the model has to separate signals that genuinely overlap. Transparent and reflective subjects are the next tier: glass, clear packaging and chrome show the background through and in themselves, so there is no clean answer about where the object ends.
Then there is anything that softens the boundary: motion-blurred limbs, an edge thrown out of focus, or heavy JPEG compression that smeared the boundary pixels before the model ever saw them. Low contrast, a white shirt on a white wall, causes a model the same trouble it causes your eye.
How should you shoot to make removal easy?
Most difficult cut-outs are made difficult at capture, and a few minutes of setup saves more time than any amount of correction afterwards.
- Put contrast between subject and background in both brightness and colour
- Leave a gap between subject and backdrop, so shadows do not fall across it
- Light evenly, and keep strong coloured bounce off the subject, since that is what creates spill
- Shoot the largest, least compressed file you can, because edge detail is what the model needs most
- Avoid shooting through glass, and keep reflective props away from the subject edge
Transparent PNG or a white composite?
It depends entirely on where the image is going, and the answer is often both.
A transparent PNG is what you want for design work, overlays and anywhere the image will sit on a coloured or patterned surface. A flat white composite is what most marketplaces require. Amazon's product image requirements state that the main image must be on a pure white background, RGB 255,255,255, with the product filling 85 to 100 percent of the frame and no text, logos, watermarks or borders. Walmart Marketplace likewise expects a pure white main image background. Etsy is the trap worth remembering: it does not support transparent PNGs, and transparent areas appear black on the listing.
Keep the transparent version as your master and generate the flat one from it rather than removing the background twice, then compress the JPEG to fit the destination's file-size cap (Photomop's studio covers removal, background replacement and compression as separate steps over the same image).
Does removing the background change the subject's colours?
The interior of the subject is untouched, since those pixels are simply kept. What changes is the boundary. Every edge pixel was a mixture of subject and background before, so once the background is gone something has to decide what colour that pixel should be on its own, and that decision is decontamination.
When it is skipped or done poorly you get halo fringing: a pale rim on an image cut from a light backdrop, a dark rim from a dark one, or a green rim from grass. Judge a cut-out by placing it on a colour opposite to the original background, because a fringe from a white studio backdrop is invisible on a white page and glaringly obvious on black.

Why does my cut-out have a faint outline of the old background?
Because the edge pixels kept some of the colour they were mixed with. The mask was solved but the true foreground colour was not, leaving a thin rim of the original backdrop. Tools fix this with decontamination or spill suppression, and shrinking the mask by a pixel is a rough manual workaround.
Should I upload a transparent PNG to Amazon or Etsy?
No to both. Amazon's requirements call for a pure white main image background rather than transparency, and Etsy does not support transparent PNGs at all, rendering those areas black. Flatten your cut-out onto white and export in the format each platform accepts.
Does background removal reduce image quality?
The kept pixels are unchanged, so the subject itself does not degrade. Quality loss comes from elsewhere: re-encoding the result as a JPEG, or a model that ran at reduced resolution so its mask had to be scaled up, which softens the boundary.
Can it handle a glass or clear plastic product?
Partly. Matting can express semi-transparency, which is the right model for glass, but it cannot separate what is refracted through the object from the object itself. A plain, evenly lit backdrop gives usable results. A busy background will need manual correction.
What resolution should I remove the background at?
Work from the original at full size. Edge quality depends on how much boundary detail the model can see, so downscaling first permanently costs you hair and fine detail. If a tool has an output size limit, remove the background first and resize afterwards.
