White balance

White balance is the adjustment that makes neutral things look neutral under whatever light you shot in. Cameras and editors correct for the colour of the light source along two axes, a blue to orange temperature measured in kelvin and a green to magenta tint, so white paper reads as white.

What are kelvin and tint actually measuring?

Kelvin describes where a light sits on the blue to orange axis. Low numbers are warm and orange, high numbers are cool and blue, which feels backwards until you remember it comes from the physics of heated metal rather than from how the light feels.

Tint handles the second axis, green to magenta, which is what fluorescent tubes and some LED panels need because their output does not sit neatly on the blue to orange line.

Why does the slider seem to work in reverse?

Because you are describing the light, not the picture. Setting a higher kelvin value tells the software the scene was lit by bluer light, so it compensates by adding warmth, and the image gets more orange.

The reliable way to work is not by number but by reference. Photograph a grey card or any known neutral surface in the same light, then click it with the white balance eyedropper. Everything else falls into place from that one measurement.

How does white balance wreck a white backdrop?

Mixed lighting is the usual culprit. A room with daylight through a window and a warm ceiling bulb has two different light colours falling on the same backdrop, so one side of your white paper photographs blue-grey and the other yellow. A single global white balance cannot fix both.

Two things then go wrong. The backdrop no longer samples anywhere near pure white, which fails a marketplace requirement outright, and background removal has a harder time because the tone the software is separating from shifts across the frame. The clean fixes are to kill the mixed source and use one light colour, or to replace the backdrop altogether, which is what a background replacement tool such as Photomop's is for.

Why does shooting RAW change the picture here?

A RAW file stores the sensor data with the white balance recorded as an instruction rather than applied to the pixels. You can set it to anything afterwards at no cost, because nothing has been baked in.

A JPEG has already had the camera's chosen balance applied, and the values have been quantised to 8 bits. Correcting a heavy cast later means stretching channels that have already been rounded, which pulls up noise and can leave banding in smooth areas. If you shoot in variable light, RAW is the cheapest insurance available.

What people get wrong about white balance

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.

  1. Shooting under a window and a warm ceiling bulb at once, which leaves a cast that no single white balance setting can remove.

  2. Trusting auto white balance with a frame-filling coloured product, where the camera reads the product as the neutral it should correct towards.

  3. Correcting a strong cast on an 8-bit JPEG instead of a RAW file, which amplifies noise and can band the smooth areas.

  4. Balancing each shot in a set separately, so a listing gallery ends up with the same item in six slightly different colours.

Why does my white background look grey or blue in photos?

Two causes, usually together. The white balance is set for a different light colour than the one falling on the backdrop, and the backdrop is underexposed relative to the product. Fix the balance with a grey card reference, then light the backdrop separately so it reaches the top of the range.

What kelvin should I use for product photography?

Whatever matches your actual lights, which matters far less than making it consistent. Daylight-balanced LED panels around 5,000 to 5,500 K are a common studio choice because they are easy to match and pleasant on most materials. Set it once and use the same value for the whole set.

Can I fix white balance after the fact?

Fully in RAW, where the setting is only an instruction and nothing has been applied to the pixels. In a JPEG you can improve a mild cast, but a strong one means stretching already-quantised channels, which raises noise and can leave banding in smooth backgrounds.

Does white balance affect background removal?

It can. A backdrop with an uneven colour cast gives the software a moving target to separate from, which tends to show up as ragged edges. An evenly lit, consistently coloured backdrop produces cleaner cut-outs regardless of which tool you use.
