The short answer

Exposure is how much light your camera lets reach the sensor, which decides whether a photo comes out dark, bright or just right. It is set by three controls working together: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Changes are measured in stops, where one stop doubles or halves the light.

How do aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together?

Each of the three controls changes the brightness of the result, and each one charges you a different price for doing it.

  • Aperture is how wide the lens opening is, written as an f-number. A lower number such as f/2.8 lets in more light but shrinks the depth of field, so less of the scene stays sharp.
  • Shutter speed is how long the sensor is exposed. Longer means brighter, but anything that moves during that time smears.
  • ISO is how much the signal is amplified afterwards. Raising it brightens the picture without changing the optics, and it makes sensor noise more visible.

Because they all move the same slider, you can trade between them. Going one stop darker on aperture and one stop brighter on shutter speed leaves the exposure identical and changes only the look.

What does a stop actually mean?

A stop is a doubling or a halving of light, and it is the common unit across all three controls. Moving from 1/125 to 1/250 of a second is one stop down. Moving from ISO 400 to ISO 800 is one stop up. Exposure compensation on a camera or phone is measured in the same unit, usually in thirds of a stop, which is why the scale reads -2, -1, 0, +1, +2.

Thinking in stops makes editing predictable too. If a shot is a stop dark, you know you need to double the light, not nudge a brightness slider and hope.

Why do underexposed product shots look cheap?

An underexposed frame carries a weak signal, so when you lift it in an editor you amplify the sensor noise sitting underneath the image along with the subject. Whites drift towards grey, colours lose saturation and go muddy, and fine texture such as fabric weave or grain in wood turns into speckle.

Camera meters make this worse on plain backgrounds. A light meter aims for mid-grey, so a product on a white sweep reads as far too bright to the camera and it pulls the exposure down. The white goes grey, the product goes dark, and the whole listing looks second-hand even when the item is new. Dialling in positive exposure compensation, often around one to two stops, is the usual fix.

If a whole shoot came out consistently dark under the same lighting, correcting the set in one pass keeps them matched. Photomop includes batch editing for exactly this kind of run, which is more consistent than nudging each file by eye.

What happens when you blow out the highlights?

When a pixel reaches maximum brightness it clips, and there is nothing recorded above that value. No editor can recover what was never captured, which is why highlights are the dangerous end of the scale. Shadows hold some data, however noisy; clipped highlights hold none.

For sellers this matters at the edges. If the white background is blown out and the product is pale or has a glossy rim, the outline of the item dissolves into the background. Background removal then has nothing to grip on, and the cut-out comes back with a chewed edge or a missing corner. Keeping the background bright but just below clipping gives a clean, separable boundary.

What people get wrong about exposure

Each one is a real failure mode, not a style preference.

  1. Trusting the camera meter on a white background, which reads all that white as mid-grey and underexposes the product.

  2. Rescuing a dark photo by dragging brightness up in an editor, which lifts sensor noise along with the subject.

  3. Assuming a blown-out white background is harmless, when clipped highlights swallow the product outline and make a clean cut-out much harder.

  4. Raising ISO first when the light is poor, instead of adding light or steadying the camera and using a longer shutter.

What does one stop of exposure mean?

One stop is a doubling or halving of the light in the photo. It applies the same way to all three controls, so one stop brighter can come from opening the aperture one step, leaving the shutter open twice as long, or doubling the ISO. Cameras usually let you adjust in thirds of a stop.

Is it better to underexpose or overexpose?

Slight underexposure is safer, because clipped highlights cannot be recovered while shadows still hold some data. The cost is noise when you lift them. For product shots on white, expose for the product and let the background sit bright but just below clipping.

Can you fix an overexposed photo?

Only partly. If the highlights are clipped to pure white, no detail exists to restore and an editor can at best darken a flat white patch. A RAW file gives you slightly more headroom than a JPEG, but the safe fix is always to reshoot with less exposure.

Does exposure affect file size?

Indirectly, yes. A photo shot too dark and then brightened carries amplified noise, and random noise is exactly what JPEG and WebP compress badly. The same picture exposed correctly at capture will usually compress to a noticeably smaller file at the same quality setting.
