This is the difference that explains all the others. remove.bg is a cloud service: you upload a file, their servers run the model, and the cut-out comes back down. That is why there is a credit counter, why the free web preview is capped at 0.25 megapixels, and why the API is priced per image. Each download costs them real GPU time.
Photomop works the other way round. The model downloads to your device once, caches there, and runs in the tab through WebGPU where the browser supports it and WebAssembly everywhere else. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed, and written back out as a download. It never reaches a server of ours, which is a stronger statement than a policy promising nobody will look at it.
remove.bg is unusually clear about this, which deserves credit. The web preview is free and capped at 0.25 megapixels, roughly a thumbnail. The desktop apps and the API give you 50 free previews a month at the same quality, and signing up adds one bonus credit so you can test a single HD download. After that, an HD file costs a credit.
Photomop has no export counter, no resolution ceiling that we impose and no watermark. The ceiling is your own hardware. On a laptop, a full-size phone photo is routine. On an older phone we run inference at a reduced size and composite the result back onto your untouched full resolution original, so the file you download is still the size you started with.
One credit buys one HD download. A preview taken through a desktop app or the API costs a quarter of a credit, which is why the free allowance reads as 50 previews rather than 50 downloads. Personal is $9.00 a month for 40 credits, or $8.10 a month billed annually, and the Professional band runs from 200 credits at $39.00 up to 2,800 at $389.00.
The detail worth reading twice is expiry. Credits attached to a subscription stop working when that subscription lapses, so a quiet quarter is money gone. Only pay as you go credits, bought outside a plan, carry on indefinitely. We could not read a unit price for those at source, so this page does not quote one, and you should check it before you buy.
Reach, mostly. remove.bg turns up inside Photoshop, Figma, GIMP, Sketch and PowerPoint, on Windows, macOS and Linux, on the command line, through Shopify, and through Zapier and Make. If your work already lives in one of those, the cut-out arrives without you opening a new tab. Bulk editing is documented at up to 500 images a minute, which no browser tab is going to match.
There is a blunter gap too. remove.bg ships desktop apps, plugins and a mature API, and we ship none of those. On tools, upscaling, object removal and the passport photo tool do not have a working page yet. If you need one of those this afternoon, that is a real argument and this page will not try to talk you out of it.
Work from your actual volume. Forty HD downloads a month on Personal is $108.00 a year monthly, or $97.20 billed annually. Two hundred a month on Professional is $468.00, or $421.20 annually. Below about ten images a month, a one-time credit pack from Erase.bg or Slazzer usually beats any subscription, because nothing expires while you are not using it.
Photomop is free to use and the paid plan is published at $8 a month, or $5 a month billed yearly, and is not open for purchase yet. Nothing in the toolbox is held back for it. What it adds is unattended batch over a folder, HD background packs and an API, which are the parts that genuinely cost money to run.

The case against us is short and worth saying out loud: upscale image, remove object and passport photo do not have a working page yet, so those jobs need another tool today, and there is no hosted API today, so a workflow that needs one has to look elsewhere. If either of those is the thing you need this week, remove.bg is the better answer today and this page is not going to argue otherwise.
