Alibaba.com product image requirements

Every one of the 6 image rules below comes off a page Alibaba.com publishes, with the source linked.

The short answer

Alibaba.com's Rules for Filling of Product Information set three hard limits on every product image: the file must not exceed 3MB, the image ratio must be between 1:1 and 1:1.3, and the resolution must be greater than 350px by 350px. Images that miss any of these are not uploaded to the product release interface at all.

What Alibaba.com asks for

Every row states where it comes from. A rule read off a page Alibaba.com publishes is marked as a primary source; a figure that circulates among sellers without appearing in the platform’s own documentation is marked and hedged, and it is never printed as though the two carry the same weight.

Alibaba.com image requirements: minimum resolution, image ratio, maximum file size, enforcement, image content, background colour
RequirementWhat Alibaba.com asks forWhere it comes from
Minimum resolutionGreater than 350px x 350pxThis is the upload floor, not a quality target. Buyers zoom, so a 350px image looks poor next to competing listings.Primary source
Image ratioBetween 1:1 and 1:1.3A square 1:1 export sits safely in the middle of the permitted band and survives every thumbnail crop.Primary source
Maximum file size3MB per imageStated as the size of the image must not exceed 3MB.Primary source
EnforcementNon-compliant images are not uploaded to the product release interfaceThe block happens at upload, so the failure looks like the picker silently refusing your file.Primary source
Image contentMust be consistent with the text information and accurately reflect the actual situation of the product; clear, complete, without smear or coverPrimary source
Background colourNo white background rule is stated in the platform ruleArticle 5 sets only file, ratio and resolution limits plus accuracy. A clean plain background is best practice for buyer trust, not a published requirement.Primary source

  • Primary source means the value is read off a page Alibaba.com publishes, linked under Sources below. 6 of 6 rows here are primary.
  • Platforms change these rules without announcing them. Every source below carries the date it was read, and the figures here were checked on 10 August 2026.

Why this matters on Alibaba.com

Alibaba.com does not reject a bad image after review. It refuses it at the door. The rule says that images which do not meet the specifications will not be uploaded to the product release interface, so the file never reaches your listing and you get no explanation beyond a stalled upload.

The practical cost is time. A supplier posting fifty SKUs with 4MB camera JPEGs sees every single upload fail, assumes the browser is broken, and loses an afternoon before finding the 3MB line. The second cost is exposure. A product with fewer images than its competitors converts worse in a category grid where buyers compare a dozen suppliers in one scroll, and an unfinished listing gives your Star Rating nothing to reward.

The accuracy clause carries a heavier penalty than the size clause. Images must match the text and show the real product without smearing or unrelated items covering it. Listings that fail that test are a product information violation, not a formatting slip, and repeat violations sit in the enforcement track rather than the upload track.

The walkthrough

How do you get a photo through Alibaba.com?

5 things in order, each one answering a question a seller actually types.

  1. What is actually blocking your upload?

Check the three numbers in this order, because they fail in this order. First the file size: anything over 3MB is refused. Then the ratio: your image must fall between 1:1 and 1:1.3, so a 4:3 photo straight from a phone at 1.33 is right on the edge and a 16:9 crop is far outside it. Then the pixels: the resolution must be greater than 350 x 350.

  2. Which export size should you standardise on?

Pick one master size and use it for every SKU. A square 1000 x 1000 JPEG sits inside the permitted ratio band, clears the 350px floor by a wide margin, gives buyers a usable zoom, and compresses to well under 3MB at normal quality. Larger masters are fine as long as the file stays under the limit, but past about 1600px you are adding weight that no buyer sees.

  3. How do you fix a ratio failure without recropping by hand?

Do not stretch the photo. Place it on a square canvas instead, so the product keeps its true proportions and the extra space becomes background. Photomop is a photo studio that runs on your own device, and its crop tool locks a 1:1 frame while its resize tool sets the exact pixel dimensions, so a mixed folder of portrait and landscape shots comes out as one consistent square set.

  4. How do you get under 3MB without a visible quality drop?

Compress rather than shrink. A 1000px square JPEG at roughly 80 to 85 percent quality usually lands between 150KB and 400KB, which is far below the ceiling and loads fast for buyers on slow connections. Only reduce dimensions if compression alone still leaves you over the limit, and never drop below the 350px floor while doing it.

  5. Does the image match what you wrote, and is anything covering it?

Read your title and attributes next to the photo. The rule requires images to be consistent with the text information and to accurately reflect the actual situation of the product. If the title says a ten piece set, the image shows ten pieces. It also bans smearing on the product or packaging, and bans unrelated items covering the product, so no blurred out logos, no stickers pasted over branding, no props in front of the item.

The settings, in one place

The Photomop preset for Alibaba.com

Set a square 1000 by 1000 pixel canvas, fit the product inside it without stretching, and export as JPEG at around 85 percent quality so every file lands comfortably under the 3MB limit and inside the 1:1 ratio band.

Resize image runs on your own device, at full resolution, with no watermark on the export.

What goes wrong on Alibaba.com

Every one of these is a real rejection or a real drop in placement, not a matter of taste.

  1. Uploading straight from a DSLR or phone at 4MB or more, then assuming the upload widget is broken when nothing appears.

  2. Exporting at 16:9 or 4:5 because it looked good on a website, which falls outside the 1:1 to 1:1.3 band and is refused.

  3. Treating 350 x 350 as a target rather than a floor, so buyers zoom into a soft, pixelated image and leave.

  4. Smearing out a factory logo or another brand's mark instead of reshooting, which the rule explicitly bans.

  5. Showing a full retail set in the photo when the listing only sells a single unit, which breaks the consistency requirement.

  6. Assuming Alibaba.com enforces a pure white background like Amazon does, and rebuilding a whole catalogue for a rule that is not published.

Questions sellers ask

Alibaba.com image requirements, answered

The questions people search for once a photo has already been refused.

What is the minimum image size on Alibaba.com?

The published rule requires a resolution greater than 350px by 350px. That is the absolute upload floor. Because buyers zoom on the product page, a square export of 1000 x 1000 or larger is the practical working size.

Does Alibaba.com require a white background?

The Rules for Filling of Product Information do not state a background colour requirement. They cover file size, ratio, resolution and accuracy. A plain light background is still the safer commercial choice because it makes your thumbnail readable in a crowded category grid.

Why does my image fail to upload with no error message?

Because the platform blocks it before it reaches your listing. The rule says images that do not meet the specifications will not be uploaded to the product release interface. Check the file size against 3MB, the ratio against the 1:1 to 1:1.3 band, and the resolution against 350px first.

Can I use the same images on Alibaba.com and AliExpress?

Usually yes, if you build to the stricter spec. A square export at 1000 x 1000 or above satisfies Alibaba.com's ratio band and also suits AliExpress, where square main images are the norm. Watch file size separately, since the two platforms set different ceilings.

Are watermarks allowed on Alibaba.com product images?

The image rule does not name watermarks directly, but it does require images to be clear and complete, with no smearing and nothing unrelated covering the product. A watermark across the product is hard to defend under that wording.
