The short answer

Walmart Marketplace recommends 2000 x 2000 pixel images at 300 ppi to enable zoom, with a minimum of 500 x 500. The main image needs a seamless pure white background at RGB 255,255,255. JPEG is preferred and each file must stay under 1 MB, with no text, logos, watermarks or borders.

What Walmart Marketplace asks for

Every row states where it comes from. A rule read off a page Walmart Marketplace publishes is marked as a primary source; a figure that circulates among sellers without appearing in the platform’s own documentation is marked and hedged, and it is never printed as though the two carry the same weight.

Walmart Marketplace image requirements: main image background, recommended size, minimum size, maximum file size, accepted formats, prohibited on images, swatch image, below the minimum
RequirementWhat Walmart Marketplace asks forWhere it comes from
Main image backgroundSeamless pure white, RGB 255,255,255Seamless means no visible edge where a backdrop meets a surface, no gradient and no shadow falling across the backdrop.Primary source
Recommended size2000 x 2000 px at 300 ppiThis is the size that enables the zoom viewer on the item page.Primary source
Minimum size500 x 500 px at 72 ppiMeeting only the minimum means no zoom, which on a marketplace built around price comparison costs you the detail argument.Primary source
Maximum file size1 MB per imageThis is the constraint that catches everyone. A 2000 x 2000 photo under 1 MB needs a deliberate export, not a default one.Primary source
Accepted formatsJPEG or JPG preferred. PNG, BMP and GIF are accepted. Animated GIFs are not.PNG is accepted but almost never fits under 1 MB at 2000 x 2000, so JPEG is the practical answer.Primary source
Prohibited on imagesNo graphics, illustrations, logos, watermarks, overlays, text, borders or couponsBroader than most marketplaces, since it names illustrations and overlays as well as text and watermarks.Primary source
Swatch image100 x 100 pxUsed for colour and pattern variants. It is a separate asset from the main image, not a crop of it.Primary source
Below the minimumItems with images under 500 x 500 px are reported to be unpublished automaticallyReported by sellers and by support documentation. Walmart Marketplace does not state this figure on a page we could read, so treat it as a working number rather than a rule.Corroborated by seller-facing third parties rather than quoted from Walmart's own guide, so treat 500 x 500 as an absolute floor either way.Reported

  • Primary source means the value is read off a page Walmart Marketplace publishes, linked under Sources below. 7 of 8 rows here are primary.
  • Reported means sellers and support documentation agree on the figure but Walmart Marketplace does not state it anywhere we could read. 1 row is reported.
  • Platforms change these rules without announcing them. Every source below carries the date it was read, and the figures here were checked on 10 August 2026.

Why this matters on Walmart Marketplace

Walmart's image rules contain one combination that no other marketplace asks for: 2000 x 2000 pixels and under 1 MB at the same time. Amazon wants big files and does not care much about weight. Etsy wants small files and does not ask for 2000 pixels. Walmart wants both, and a default export from any camera or phone fails the second half.

Get it wrong and the failure is not subtle. Images over the file size limit are refused at upload, so a bulk item feed comes back with errors against rows you thought were finished. Images under 500 x 500 are reported to trigger an automatic unpublish, which means the item exists in your account and cannot be bought.

The white background rule is as strict as Amazon's and worded slightly harder: seamless pure white. A backdrop with a visible curve, a shadow falling across it or a faint gradient from the lighting fails even when the RGB value at the centre reads 255. Walmart's content teams review images, so this is not only an automated check.

One practical caution before you rely on any figure here. Walmart's own image guidelines page returned no data when checked on 10 August 2026, at both the US and the Canadian path. The specs below were read directly from Walmart's guide the day before. Confirm them against Seller Center for your own account before you reshoot a catalogue.

The walkthrough

How do you get a photo through Walmart Marketplace?

5 things in order, each one answering a question a seller actually types.

  1. How do you fit 2000 x 2000 pixels into 1 MB?

Export JPEG, resize first, and let the plain background do the work for you.

The good news is that a product on a seamless white background compresses extremely well. Flat areas of identical colour cost almost nothing in a JPEG, so most of the file is spent on the product itself. A single item on true white at 2000 x 2000 typically lands between 200 KB and 600 KB at 80 percent quality.

    • Resize to exactly 2000 x 2000 before compressing, not after.
    • Export JPEG at 80 to 85 percent quality and check the resulting size.
    • Strip metadata, which can add tens of kilobytes.
    • If it is still over 1 MB, the background is probably not clean. Noise, gradient and texture in what should be flat white are what inflate the file.

That last point is the useful diagnostic: on Walmart, a file that will not compress is usually telling you the background is not seamless.

  2. What does seamless pure white actually mean?

Every background pixel at RGB 255,255,255, with no visible join, no shadow on the backdrop and no falloff towards the corners.

Photographing that is harder than it sounds. A sweep of white paper lit from one side reads 255 in the middle and somewhere in the 230s at the edges, and the curve where the paper leaves the table shows as a soft grey band. Walmart's reviewers see that band.

Replacing the background is the dependable route: cut the product out and place it on a flat white canvas, so every background pixel is the same value by construction. Photomop is a photo studio that runs on your own device, and its change background tool produces exactly this, a product on a uniform white field with no gradient to compress or explain.

Keep any contact shadow deliberate and subtle. A soft shadow directly under the product helps it sit on the page. A shadow that spreads across the frame turns the background into something that is no longer seamless white.

  3. Which images does the white rule apply to?

The main image. Secondary images are where the rest of your argument lives, and they do not need to be on white.

    • Main image: product only, seamless pure white, no text, no props.
    • Secondary images: in use, in context, at scale, from other angles.
    • Detail images: materials, finish, controls, ports.
    • Swatch images: a separate 100 x 100 asset for each colour or pattern variant.

The prohibition on graphics, text, overlays and borders is broader than the background rule and applies more widely, so resist the urge to add a feature callout even on a secondary image.

  4. What do you do when a feed upload rejects your images?

Check the three numbers in order, because they account for nearly every rejection.

    • File size. Over 1 MB is the most common single cause, and it is the easiest to check across a whole folder at once.
    • Dimensions. Under 500 x 500 fails outright. Between 500 and 2000 passes but disables zoom.
    • Format. Animated GIFs are refused. So is anything outside JPEG, PNG, BMP and GIF, which rules out WebP, HEIC and TIFF.

If all three pass and the item is still rejected, the cause is usually visual: a background that is not seamless, a watermark, or text that is part of the packaging design and reads as an overlay.

  5. How do you handle a whole catalogue at once?

Standardise the output before you touch the individual photos.

Decide on 2000 x 2000 square JPEG, pure white background, under 1 MB, and apply that as a single batch setting across the catalogue. Doing it per product is how a 400 item catalogue ends up with 400 slightly different backgrounds, some of which pass review and some of which do not.

Keep the originals. Walmart's guidelines have moved before, and re-exporting from a full resolution master is trivial while recovering detail from a compressed 1 MB JPEG is not.

The settings, in one place

The Photomop preset for Walmart Marketplace

Resize to 2,000 by 2,000 pixels on a pure white RGB 255,255,255 background, then export JPEG at high quality targeting under 1 MB per file.

Compress image runs on your own device, at full resolution, with no watermark on the export.

What goes wrong on Walmart Marketplace

Every one of these is a real rejection or a real drop in placement, not a matter of taste.

  1. Exporting a 2000 x 2000 image straight from an editor and finding it lands at 3 MB, three times Walmart's 1 MB limit.

  2. Uploading a PNG because it looked cleaner, when a 2000 x 2000 PNG almost never fits under 1 MB.

  3. Treating a lit paper backdrop as seamless white when the curve where it leaves the table shows as a grey band.

  4. Listing at the 500 x 500 minimum, which passes the check and switches off the zoom viewer buyers use to compare.

  5. Adding a size or feature overlay, which Walmart prohibits alongside graphics, illustrations, logos, watermarks, text, borders and coupons.

  6. Reusing an Amazon main image with a burned in brand logo, which passes nowhere and fails on both platforms.

Questions sellers ask

Walmart Marketplace image requirements, answered

The questions people search for once a photo has already been refused.

What size do Walmart Marketplace images need to be?

2000 x 2000 pixels at 300 ppi is recommended and enables zoom on the item page. The minimum is 500 x 500 at 72 ppi. Each file must be under 1 MB regardless of dimensions, which is the constraint most sellers hit first.

Why is my Walmart image upload failing?

File size is the usual cause. Walmart caps images at 1 MB, and a 2000 x 2000 export at default quality is typically two to three times that. Resize to exactly 2000 x 2000, export JPEG at around 80 to 85 percent quality, and strip the metadata.

Does Walmart require a pure white background?

Yes, on the main image. The requirement is a seamless pure white background at RGB 255,255,255. Seamless is the harder half: no visible join where a backdrop meets a surface, no shadow across the backdrop and no gradient towards the corners.

What happens if my Walmart images are too small?

Below 500 x 500 pixels, items are reported to be unpublished automatically, meaning the item sits in your account and cannot be bought. Between 500 x 500 and 2000 x 2000 the item stays live but the zoom viewer does not engage.

Can I use the same images on Walmart and Amazon?

Often yes, since both want a product on pure white with no text or logos. The difference is weight: Amazon is comfortable with large files while Walmart caps at 1 MB, so keep a full resolution master and export a compressed 2000 x 2000 version for Walmart.

What is the Walmart swatch image?

A separate 100 x 100 pixel asset used to represent a colour or pattern variant on the item page. It is its own image rather than a crop of the main photo, so a variant that has no swatch shows as an unlabelled option.
