The short answer

TikTok Shop requires every product image to be larger than 600 x 600 pixels. Upload square images on a plain background, white recommended, with the product filling at least 60 percent of the frame. Watermarks, borders, promotional text, logos and stickers are not allowed on the main image. You may upload up to nine images per listing.

What TikTok Shop asks for

Every row states where it comes from. A rule read off a page TikTok Shop publishes is marked as a primary source; a figure that circulates among sellers without appearing in the platform’s own documentation is marked and hedged, and it is never printed as though the two carry the same weight.

Slide the table sideways to see every column.

  • Primary source means the value is read off a page TikTok Shop publishes, linked under Sources below. 10 of 11 rows here are primary.
  • Unconfirmed means the claim circulates and we could not stand it up at any source. 1 row is unconfirmed, and it is labelled that way in the table rather than left to look like the rest.
  • Platforms change these rules without announcing them. Every source below carries the date it was read, and the figures here were checked on 10 August 2026.

Why this matters on TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop checks product images twice: once at upload, and again after the listing goes live. An image below 600 x 600 pixels is refused outright, so the product never publishes. An image that clears the size check but carries a watermark, a border or promotional text fails more slowly. The listing publishes, moderation flags it, and the product stops appearing in the shop tab and cannot be attached to videos or LIVE sessions until you replace the image.

There is a third cost sellers rarely connect to their photos. TikTok scores each listing for quality and feeds that score into ranking. A cropped, blurry or duplicated main image pulls the product down a tier, which shows up as fewer impressions rather than an error message. Nothing tells you it happened.

The walkthrough

How do you get a photo through TikTok Shop?

5 things in order, each one answering a question a seller actually types.

  1. Is your image larger than 600 x 600 pixels?

Check the pixel dimensions of the file, not the print size your photo app shows. TikTok Shop requires a resolution greater than 600 x 600 pixels and the uploader refuses anything smaller. Stretching a supplier thumbnail spreads the same pixels over a larger canvas and produces a soft image that fails the quality check instead of the size check. Aim well above the floor: a 1200 x 1200 pixel file gives buyers a usable zoom on a phone and leaves headroom for TikTok's own compression.

  2. Is the image square, with the product filling the frame?

TikTok Shop accepts up to nine square images and renders them as squares in the grid, so upload at 1:1 and decide the crop yourself. Two further rules govern framing: the product must take up at least 60 percent of the frame, and it must appear in its entirety, so no edge may run off the side.

If your photograph is landscape, do not squash it. Crop around the product, then add plain padding on the short edge so the item stays whole and still dominates.

  3. Is the background a solid colour?

The published rule is a solid colour background, with white recommended. A worktop, a carpet or a shelf of other stock reads as busy and drags the listing into the lower quality tier even when nothing is formally rejected. Cutting the product out and placing it on flat white rescues most flagged TikTok Shop images. Photomop is a photo studio that runs on your own device and its background remover runs this across a folder of product shots in one pass.

  4. Have you removed every overlay?

The guidelines forbid watermarks, borders, promotional text, logos, graphics covering the product and marketing or promotion stickers. In practice the culprit is a supplier catalogue image with the badges already baked in.

    • Sale flashes, percentage-off roundels and free delivery banners
    • The supplier's logo sitting in a corner
    • Coloured frames or drop-shadow borders
    • Arrows, callouts and feature labels drawn over the item
    • Digital renderings used in place of a photograph of the real product

Keep every image clean, not only the first.

  5. Do you have enough images, and are they genuinely different?

Listings with five or more images reach the higher quality tier. Use the first slot for a clean front view on plain background, then add side, back, scale, material detail and in-use shots. Padding the count by repeating the main photo does not work: duplicate main images are named specifically as a fault. Every image must also be in colour. You may attach one video, which must not exceed 5 MB.

The settings, in one place

The Photomop preset for TikTok Shop

Resize to a 1:1 square at 1200 x 1200 pixels, comfortably above TikTok Shop's 600 x 600 floor, adding plain white padding on the short edge rather than cropping so the product stays whole and still fills roughly 70 percent of the frame.

Resize image runs on your own device, at full resolution, with no watermark on the export.

What goes wrong on TikTok Shop

Every one of these is a real rejection or a real drop in placement, not a matter of taste.

  1. Uploading a supplier's catalogue image that still carries their logo, a discount roundel or a decorative border.

  2. Enlarging a 400 pixel thumbnail, which clears the pixel count but produces a soft image that fails on quality.

  3. Shooting on a worktop or carpet, which counts as a busy background rather than the required solid colour.

  4. Cropping so tightly that an edge runs off the frame, breaking the rule that the item must appear in its entirety.

  5. Padding the image count by repeating the main photo, which is flagged as a duplicate rather than counted.

  6. Uploading a landscape photo and letting TikTok square-crop it, which usually slices the top or bottom off the product.

Questions sellers ask

TikTok Shop image requirements, answered

The questions people search for once a photo has already been refused.

What is the minimum image size for TikTok Shop?

Greater than 600 x 600 pixels. The US Academy guidance states a minimum resolution greater than 600x600, and the regional listing guidelines phrase it as at least 600 x 600. Treat 600 as the floor and upload at 1200 x 1200 or larger.

Does TikTok Shop publish a maximum file size or accepted formats?

Not on its public pages. Those limits sit in the Seller Center uploader rather than the Academy articles, so any precise megabyte figure quoted elsewhere is guesswork. JPEG and PNG are safe. The one published file size figure covers product video, capped at 5 MB.

Does the background have to be pure white?

No. The rule is a solid colour background and white is recommended rather than mandated, so a flat light grey also complies. White remains safer because it matches the surrounding grid and keeps product edges readable at thumbnail size.

How many product images can I upload?

Up to nine square images per listing, with the same cap applying to any mosaic image. Five or more distinct images reaches the higher quality tier, so nine is worth reaching if you have genuinely different angles to show.

My image uploaded fine but the product is now hidden. Why?

Upload checks dimensions, moderation checks content. A file can be large enough and still fail later for a watermark, a promotion sticker, a digital rendering standing in for a real photograph, or a duplicated main image. Replace the offending image and resubmit.
